Battle of Covadonga (722)
Seven years afther the Muslim conquest of Iberia in the Battle of Guadalete, a local Asturian strong man named Pelayo took refuge in the extreme norht of the península and established the Kingdom of Asturias. Pelayo, defeated the Muslims int he Battle of Covandonga and prevented the conquest of the north.
How does a Muslim City look like?
Al-Andalus society as made up of Muslims, Christians and Jews:The Muslims were the rulers, and had most of the wealth. They also owned the best land.
The Christians were called Mozarabs. Some converted to Islam to enjoy the same rights as the Muslims. Converted Christians were called muladíes.
The Jews were a minority. They lived separately in the Jewish quarter of towns and cities.
Here you have an image where you can see how a Muslim city was organized. As we have studied, the most important parts of a Muslim city were:
Wall (surrounding the city), Alcazabar, Citadel, Mosque, Medina (in the centre of the city and where the craftman and merchants lived) and souk (the market)
Battle of Guadalete
The end of the Visigoth Kingdom was in 711 AD, when the Muslims conquested the Peninsula. Here you have a video explaining it. The end of theVisigoths was at the Battle of Guadalete.
This new part of history starts with the falling of the Roman Empire in 476 AD, and finishes in 1492 with the discovering of America by Cristóbal Columbus.
